I found a book on Martin Creed's work in the library and the reason I picked it up was because of the title "Works" but on the binder it had written- “I don’t think I want to make a book of my work. I am scared to look at what I have done in case I don’t like it, and I am scared to show it to others in case they don’t like it”. This caught my attention and so I started to look at his works. The pictures of the rooms filled with balloons really intrigued me as did the works he did with lighting.
This made me think about my own project and how I wish to change (as the keyword was "Change") the space around me into something perhaps uncomfortable or surreal to the viewer. Making an ordinary common space into an alien and unknown space. Martin Creed studied art at the Slade School of Art from the ages of 18 to 21. Most of his works are numbered and the titles usually describe the piece of work exactly. After studying at art school he worked in London until 2001 and then moved to Italy with his then wife Paolo. The reason they moved was because they were watching a film together based on Alicudi, just off the island of Sicily. A group of people go there to have peace and quiet but then miss television, as there is none there so they go back home. Quite an unusual way to make a decision about moving house, however Martin Creed is quite spontaneous and strange in his actions and I find the his whole decision about moving relatively poetic and comical. I also think this poetic side is reflected in his art, especially in his large light instillation.
