3D Design

(Trying to get the right shape for the tent)
(Picture of someone inside kneeling down at the table)
My first ever week of the UCA Farnham foundation course started with 3D Design. I wasn't really excited by the idea, because from previous experience I really dislike product design which, in my brain, was the same thing as 3D design. We were given the subject of "Super Suitcase" so we had to design a suitcase with useful things inside it. Inspired by Do Ho Suh (more about him on the "Artists" category) I created a fold-up tent which people could use as a social space to talk, eat and maybe even sleep. This could be set up outside or even in a room in a house, then creating a separate space to relax and have fun with friends. The model I made was an exploded view so people could see inside. The idea was that the tent was in the shape of a cone (after giving up trying to create a perfect hexagon tent) resembling a tipi shape. I personally associate tipis with social activities as they are in a circle, giving a feel of equality between people but also the fact you can see everybody at once. Also, a group of people will always sit in a circle so they can socialise more easily. I put a table in the middle for those who wanted to take the tent outside so they can eat. Again, the table is also round so that everybody can use the table. I like the idea of a purposely created social space and if I had more time, would have done a much larger scale model, or maybe even created the product.
(The model people are based on my height- 5ft 4)
