Do Ho Suh

Do Ho Suh- Staircase III (Tate Modern)
Whilst studying the 3D design pathway, given the task of creating a "super suitcase", we were shown the work of Do Ho Suh. This staircase is a reconstruction of his own in his apartment in Chelsea, New York. As it is made of polyester it is easy to fold and collapse into a small space. I liked the idea that the artist was able to fold his piece and take it with him wherever he travelled and made me think about how to create my own design.
Do Ho Suh was born in 1962 in Seoul, South Korea. He studied fine art in Korea and then moved to New York for further study in design. Influence of this can be shown in his "Staircase" pieces as he had to design how he was going to create a 1:1 scale of part of his home. From studying fine art he was then able to take his design and create a visually stunning yet simplistic artwork. I love the transparency of the piece as it adds a light weight in contrast to an actual staircase made heavy due to the use of wood or solid materials. The transparency also allows the viewer to see the wire detail but also the balcony above the red "ceiling" sheet.
